We have started learning about past tense verbs.
We know that there are two types of verbs: regular and irregular.
REGULAR VERBS
Regular verbs all add "d" or "-ed" to the basic form. HOWEVER, that ending may be pronounced as "D," "ED" or even "T!" depending upon the environment. Here's a video that can help you understand.

IRREGULAR VERBS
Irregular verbs must be memorized. There is not always a good reason or pattern to explain the different forms, like:
go and went
do and did
say and said
write and wrote
is/am and was
are and were, etc. Please study a few of these verbs every day. You can use Quizlet if you like. Here's a link:
